The Government yesterday offered Rs.16 billion stimulative economic package to the consumers to ensure best performance in the commercial agriculture, industrial and services sectors, in the form of a ‘mini budget’ to benefit the entire country in 2009 that dawns tomorrow.

Army closing in on Paranthan, Kilinochchi

The Security Forces are poised to launch a major breakthrough with troops closing on isolated strongholds as Task Force I troops both in Paranthan and Kilinochchi areas confronted the LTTE in the remaining terrain of the Jaffna-Kandy Highway, military sources from Wanni battlefront told the Daily News yesterday.

Govt intervenes to stabilise economy

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday assured the nation that the Government would take all possible steps to stabilise the nation’s economy whenever there occurred a financial crisis. “That was a step we have already proved by intervening in the crisis faced by the Seylan Bank,” The President pointed out.

No run on Seylan deposits

Seylan Bank Director/General Manager/CEO Ajitha Pasqual told Daily News Business that there had not been any panic withdrawals or run on the deposits as at yesterday although there had been some initial panic withdrawals of small amounts.
