President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his second visit to Vakarai since its liberation yesterday assured the people who had undergone many challenges and hardships due to terrorism, that they had a bright future ahead.

New Vakarai MV – pride of the East

The new Vakarai Maha Vidyalayam is the most modern and technically advanced school complex in the Batticaloa District. The school which was destroyed by the 2004 Tsunami and which received further blows due to abuse by LTTE terrorists during their occupation of the area, has now been reconstructed and stands strong as an inspiration to students, teachers and public who had to overcome many challenges and hardships. The school has been reconstructed by the Education Ministry in collaboration with the European Union and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Economic developments stronger than expected:

First review of IMF Stand-By Arrangement

The economic performance has improved since July. There is a steady inflow to the bond market and foreign investments to the country. Sri Lanka’s economy is showing signs of bottoming off. We are positive about the outlook and performance, said Head of IMF Mission Dr. Brian Aitken.
