Doctor who raped patient to face tough action

Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry will take stern disciplinary action against a doctor who raped a pregnant woman receiving in-house treatment at the Sri Jayawardhanapura Hospital.

He said that the woman was raped while she was receiving treatment as an in-house patient at the Sri Jayawardhanapura Hospital about two weeks ago.

The offence has already been proved by an internal investigation conducted by the hospital management.

The matter will be handed over to the Medical Council by the Ministry for further action.

According to the spokesman the doctor had visited the patient around midnight and asked her to turn to a side of the bed in order to examine her. While pretending to examine the woman, the doctor had allegedly raped her. When she screamed and asked for help, the doctor had run using a window.

The doctor has been interdicted for one month, Director General Health Services, Dr. Ajith Mendis has informed the Medical Council to take stern action in connection with the incident, he added.
