Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka in a message to mark literacy month states:

"The observation of a literary month has resulted in building an enthusiasm for reading and this year too the National Library and Documentation Services Board (NLDSB) has organized a number of programs to increase the eagerness for reading throughout the country. I applaud the efforts put in by the NLDSB to make these program a success.

"Knowledge and information is important as well as crucial in this day and age. We have an enourmous body of knowledge and information due to the advancement of modern technology and science as well as through the explorations into our traditional knowledge and practices. This knowledge increases every day. "Reading is a path towards becoming a good citizen and a person who contributes positively to the society.

"The National Library and Documentation Services Board has conducted a variety of programs to mark the National Reading Month. Reading camps, workshops, seminars, lectures and various competitions lay a foundation for creating a society enriched with knowledge and information. It is an essential need in this day and age to promote reading among children who are the true owners of a liberated motherland.

"I wish all the best to this endeavour of national importance and hope every success to the programs".
