Road to be renamed Haleem Ishak Mawatha

Ketawalamulla Lane in Dematagoda will be renamed as Haleem Ishak Mawatha on September 24 in memory of late Parliamentarian Haleem Ishak. Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka has sent the following message to mark the event.

"M. Haleem Ishak, five decades ago entered politics from the Colombo District and entered Parliament representing the Colombo Central Electorate. He was a rare personality, born a Muslim. He showed love and compassion towards all equally. Never did he say no to anyone who needs help. He served all those whom he represented without complaint. Ethnicity was not a barrier for his social services.

He represented and accepted the Bandaranaike philosophy and was a good Sri Lanka Freedom Party member. He was actively involved and contributed a great deal for the victory at the 1960 General Election. I first met him during election time in 1960. If honest and committed people enter politics they will be loved and honoured by the people."
