Rs. 1.3 m fines on drunk drivers

Panadura Magistrate Thusara Rajasinghe imposed fines totalling Rs. 1.3 million on 220 drivers who pleaded guilty to the charges of driving their vehicles under the influence of liquor. Panadura Traffic Police conducted raids from January to August 2009 along the Galle Road and produced the drivers before Court.

Most drivers did not have driving licences and Insurance Certificates. The Magistrate had imposed fines ranging from Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 9,500 with a one month suspended sentence for five years.
