A variety of inter school competitions representing exhibits of arts, essay and poetic compositions of schoolchildren islandwide were held at the BMICH to mark President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s birthday. Here President Kumaratunga presents a memento to a child who participated in a competition at a ceremony at the President’s House yesterday. Indigenous Medicine Minister Tissa Karaliyadda, Presidential Secretary W. J. K. Karunaratne, Senior Assistant Secretary Sarath Chandrasiri Vithana and Lake House Chairman Janadasa Peiris also participated.

There was high drama at the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) in Colombo when a father who was making a complaint of alleged statutory rape against a well-known UNP Provincial Councillor suddenly received a telephone call during the inquiry saying: "If you don't get out and run, I will kill you and your family."

Govt to re-build 10,000 tanks

The first phase of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government's ambitious "Dahasak Maha Wev project' (Thousand Tanks) for the renovation all derelict tanks throughout the country will commence targeting 1,000 selected tanks with the ceremonial inauguration of the work of the Havanpelessa weva in Yapahuwa on August 19.

Employment funds through supplementary estimate - Jeyaraj
