Metal Refiners' Association urges prompt action to safeguard industry The Indo-Lanka Non Ferrous Metal Refiners' Association in a letter addressed to Tourism, Industrial and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Bandaranaike has requested for prompt action to safeguard their industry as the local climate and the hospitality of the Sri Lankan Government has not been very generous to their industry. The Association in its letter says:" We have two copper melting units operating in the BOI approved Zones at Mirigama and Horana. We have signed an agreement with the BOI under their rules and regulations for establishing our industries. We have been operating in Sri Lanka during the past three years under the country's law." "Our manufacturing process has been genuine and we import copper scrap as raw materials and manufacturing copper ingots and wire bars for exports to India under the Free Trade Agreement. More than 2,600 Sri Lankans have been involved directly and indirectly with these industries and we provided all facilities to them as per country's labour law and the requirements of themselves." The letter further states: "All members of our Association are happy and enjoying the hospitality of Government authorities with whom we deal with for our operations (Sri Lanka Customs, BOI, Department of Commerce, CEA, Department of Immigration and banking systems). We are very comfortable with these authorities and systems," the release said. The association in its letter stated that they have invested US $17 million and brings US $ 152 million foreign exchange annually to Sri Lanka through their exports." Therefore our industrial process is very genuine in your country and kindly request you to take measures to safeguard our industry," the letter said. |
