Wheels turn around the world for Iranian youth by P. Krishnaswamy Iranian globe trotter, Kiumars Ali Mardani, is no arm-chair tourist to our Isle. An invalid since birth, he rolls his wheelchair around the world and has covered more than 10 countries and 14,000 kms in Asia during the past three years. Having arrived in Sri Lanka on July 22, he has already covered more than 200 kms visiting the Southern cities up to the pilgrim shrine of Kataragama. En-route to Sri Lanka, he has visited countries neighbouring Iran viz: Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Independent Republics of the former Soviet Union; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan as well as Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. He hopes to wheel his way to Nepal and from there to Athens to see the Olympic Games. But he says his hopes to visit Athens have been dashed because he was unable to get a visa to Greece in Colombo. He has been three years on the road to promote his Mission: "World Peace, Friendship and Dialogue between Nations". |
