Lankan wins 'best doctor' citation in Florida Jacksonville in Northern Florida is one of the United States' biggest cities. A few Sri Lankans have made their mark in this cosmopolitan city in their chosen fields. Dr. Amila K. Perera is one of these shining stars. Dr. Perera was featured prominently in the June issue of Jacksonville Magazine whose cover story 'Best Doctors' outlined the profiles of some of the city's best-loved doctors. She works at the Baptist Primary Care hospital in Jacksonville. She was voted by her peers as the best doctor - family physician - in Jacksonville. The full-colour Jacksonville Magazine, which has a circulation of over 100,000, had this to say about her: "Practitioner of family medicine, paediatric and gynaecological services, Dr. Amila Perera aims to provide accessible, quality health care services at a reasonable cost in an atmosphere that fosters respect and compassion. Before crossing the pond to the US, Dr. Perera graduated with honours, earning a degree in chemistry from the University of Birmingham, England and a medical degree from the University of Wales. While there, she worked in family practice and Ob/Gyn and became a member of the Royal College of General Practice." She had her early education at Bishop's College, Colombo. She proceeded to the UK with her parents in 1976. She graduated with a first class honours degree in chemistry at the Birmingham University. She received her medical degree from the Cardiff University, Wales. After qualifying as a doctor, she worked for a number of years in her father's practice at Walsall. In 1992, she settled down in the US with her accountant husband. They have a son. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ariya A. Gunawardana. |
