Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon has appointed a special committee to investigate the alleged acts of political victimisation in the Ministry and its affiliated institutions.

Following the Cabinet decision taken to investigate the political victimisation at each Ministry, Minister Tennakoon has appointed this committee to look into the complaints of Ministry employees who have been politically victimised based on their appointments, promotions and transfers during the period from December, 2001 to April, 2004, a Ministry Spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Local Government and Local Loans and Development Fund function under the Ministry purview.

Provincial Councils and Local Government Deputy Minister Jayatissa Ranaweera has been appointed as the Chairman of the committee while Ministry Additional Secretary M.S.L.Fernando and Attorney-at-Law Champani Padmasekera have been appointed as the committee members.

After investigating the complaints, the committee will recommend relief to the Ministry employees who have been subjected to political victimisation.

The committee is tasked with submitting a report to the Minister within three months which should include the committee decisions and the relief measures recommended to each employee following the complaints and appeals investigated by the committee, he said.

He said the Public Administration Ministry has already issued a circular for the benefit of the employees who have been subjected to political victimisation at Ministry level.

The employees who come under the Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry can submit their appeals to the committee set up by the Ministry.

Those politically victimised can submit a written complaint or an appeal to the committee by mentioning the allegations and reasons caused their political victimisation.

If such victims have any documents to prove their complaints, they should also submit such documents and also mention the nature of the relief they expected from the committee, he said.

He said the Ministry has already received 14 appeals of instances of political victimisation. The committee meeting held on July 21 investigated these appeals with measures taken to summon the genuine cases before the committee.
