Prestigious National Productivity Award for Lyceum by Dinushika Dissanayake The prestigious National Productivity Award awarded by the National Productivity Secretariat and the Sri Lanka Standards Institution was presented to Lyceum International School (LIS), the first international school ever to receive this award. This coveted award is presented for Leadership, Strategic planning and Human resource focus among other criteria. Lyceum founded in 1993 has reached a significant milestone in its history with this award. LIS founder and Chairman, Mohan Lal Grero told the Daily News, that his chain of schools primarily cater to the average middle class student. "Before Lyceum was established, we found that only the elite could go to international schools," he said, adding that he wanted to give an opportunity to middle class students to receive quality school education in English. LIS which began with just seven students and four teachers in Nugegoda 11 years ago, have expanded to 5,000 students and three branches in Kandana, Wattala and Panadura today. A teacher for the past 32 years and the author of 17 books on Advanced Level Maths and Physics, Grero is a veteran in the field of education. "I am here for a purpose, to serve the society," he said. Lyceum School offers a range of academic and non-academic facilities to students which enabled it to achieve its present stature. One of its students, Praveen Namasivayam was placed fourth in the Sri Lanka Mathematics Competition representing Sri Lanka at the 45th International Mathematics Olympiad in Athens, Greece. Avanthi Ratnayake was placed first in the world in accountancy at the London A/L examination 2003, the only world prize winner from Sri Lanka. Four others were ranked among the top 10 in the world for A/L and O/L results. Lyceum also has an international standard swimming pool and cricket ground. These facilities ensure a balanced education for all its students from montessori to Advanced Level. A novelty about the school is an in-house recycling plant to recycle their waste. "Our school is dedicated to quality," said Daya Liyanage, Career Guidance Counsellor at LIS. With 100 per cent pass rates in most subjects in the A/L and O/L syllabus, LIS has certainly proved the quality of its services. LIS media secretary, Anoma Doloswala said: "Our motto is 'Know thyself'. We don't compare, we don't compete." For a school with an 11 year history, Lyceum International School has established itself as a premier education provider with the recognition of its services through this award. |
