PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

[June 30 2013]

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

[June 24 2013]

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

President at World Energy Forum :

Food security as important as alternative energy

Countries must bear in mind that in the search for alternative energy, sources agricultural land of today and tomorrow must not be used. We must not let the hunger for alternative energy lead to an increase in hunger for food. The use of food crops for fuel production must be avoided to prevent the spread of today’s threat to food security, caused by turning food crops into fuel crops. The food energy for peoples’ lives should not be made the driving energy for cars, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

President Rajapaksa’s initiative similar to US President Abraham Lincoln’s

President Mahinda Rajapaksa referring the Divinegema Bill to the respective Provincial Councils and seeking their views, is similar to the action taken by former US President Abraham Lincoln, submitted Attorney at Law Faiz Mustapha PC making oral submissions before a three judge Bench of the Supreme Court yesterday. The Bench constituted Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, Justice K. Shri Pavan and Justice Gamini Amaratunge.

Weliamuna appears for Wele Suda’s wife’s Fundamental Rights petition

Piliduwa Bogahawattage Gayani alias Sujie, wife of well-known underworld gang leader Wele Suda was arrested by the CID at the Bandaranaike International Airport recently. Attorney J C Weliamuna appeared for her in a Fundamental Rights petition filed by her against the Maligakanda magistrate’s refusal to issue documents pertaining to her bail application.

Defence Secretary to meet EAM officials

Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa will meet External Affairs Ministry officials shortly to discuss how Sri Lanka could coordinate efforts with the Australian government to address the illegal immigration problem also involving Sri Lankans.
