Nalanda prize giving
The annual prize distribution of Nalanda College, Colombo will be
held at the BMICH, Colombo on October 24 at 2pm. Kotelawela Defence
University Vice Chancellor and old Nalandian Maj. Gen. Milinda
Priyadharshana will be the Chief Guest.
A large number of students who excelled in subject related and extra
curricular activities will receive prizes and awards at this ceremony,
attended by Education Ministry and Defence University officials.
Principal Ranjith Jayasundera will preside.
Musaeus prize giving
The annual prize giving of Musaeus College will be held on October 25
from 3.30 pm onwards at the Peter De Abrew Memorial Auditorium, under
the patronage of Emeritus Professor JB Dissanayake.
Conference
National Freedom Front Leader and Construction, Engineering Service,
Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa will speak at a
conference to be held at 8 am on October 23 at the Sri Lanka Foundation
Institute in Colombo. The National Freedom Front (NFF) has organized the
conference.
Fundraiser for destitute children
A fundraiser in the form of a Sing - a – long organised by the
Automobile Association of Ceylon for the Peter Weerasekera Children's
Home at Dambuwa,Buthpitiya will be held On November 2 from 7 pm onwards
at the BMICH, to coincide with All Souls Day.
The Peter Weerasekera Children's Home is an organization which has
been providing homes for destitute orphaned girls for over 50 years.For

National Fertilizer Week

The government has declared a National Fertilizer Week from October
20-27.
The Agrarian Services and Wildlife Ministry in collaboration with
National Fertilizer Secretariat and Agrarian Serices Departmet has taken
measures to conduct number of programmes on fertilizer usage during the
week, said Agrarian Commissioner M. A. S.Weerasighe. The Commissioner
also said that various programmes related to fertilizer usage will be
conducted at all Agrarian Services Centres.
According to that farmers will be able to aware about correct usage
of fertilizer, value of using fertilizer and proper time periods of
applying fertilizer. Under the Fertilizer Subsidy Programme, the
government has provided the fertilizer subsidy for 15 cultivation
seasons at the cost of Rs. 60 billion.
The organizers also hope to make farmers aware about the usage of
organic fertilizer and encourage farmers to reduce chemical fertilizer
usage.

A 28 year old mother died and her husband and child were injured and
admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital when the motorcycle they were
riding ran off the road and crashed on to a Margosa tree at Galpottegama
on the Anuradhapura – Paragaswewa Road around 8.30 pm on October 21.
No agriculture teacher

Uggalboda MV, in the Kalutara Educational Zone has no Agriculture
teacher and hundreds of students have been deprived of learning
agriculture as a subject.
The only teacher who was in-charge of agriculture at this school
retired seven years on retirement and no agriculture teacher was sent to
this school by the authorities, parents told the Daily News recently. It
is reported that there is a shortage of trained teachers for the primary
section of this popular school as well.
Uggalboda MV, which comes under the administration of Kalutara Zonal
Education office, has around 1,200 students from Grade 1 to Grade 13.
Environment friendly prison

The Weerawila Open Air Prison will be converted to an environment
friendly prison.
The Tourism Ministry will support the project to bring the prisoners
closer to the environment and to agriculture.

Wall collapses on motorcyclist

when a wall collapsed on him while riding. This happened at Jaffna
Kankesanthurai road near Muddasukaddai junction.
The walls of shops in Kankesanthurai road are being removed for road
expansion.
A wall in a shop had been demolished without proper precaution and it
had fallen on the motor cyclist who was passing the place. He was pinned
under the debris and believed to have died. But after ten minutes the
people found him alive and rushed him to Jaffna hospital. The contractor
who undertook the clearance work has fled from the place.
H’tota oil terminal work completed

Construction work on the oil terminal in the Hambantota sea port
premises has been completed.
It comprises 14 fuel storage tanks with a capacity of 10,000 cubic
metres.
A 15 storied administrative complex is functioning and it consists of
a laboratory. The cost of the project is US$ 76 million. Steps will be
taken to provide fuel to the Mattala airport. A green belt with a 15
kilometre extent and 12 kilometres width will be set up around the sea
port, Chief engineer Agil Hewa Geegana said.
Ferry service to ease transport
A ferry service between Kurikadduvan and Nainativu will be launched
to ease the transport of people and goods between these two points.
Girders for the construction of the ferry have been brought and
preliminary construction work has commenced. Minister Douglas Devananda
and Northern Province Governor GA Chrandrasiri with financial aid of the
Economic Development Ministry will oversee the construction work.
Production know-how to popularise rice cream

The Institute of Post Harvest Technology will introduce rice cream
preparation technology in an effort to promote local production.
Institute's Director Swarna Tillakaratne said at a meeting of the
Anunradhapura District Agricultural Committee that Rice cream can be
produced at a low cost and sold at Rs 4 each as a substitute to ice
cream.
The institute is prepared to provide all support for those interested
by providing instructions and production machines at a subsidized rate.
All participants at the meeting were given an opportunity to taste
the Rice cream produced by the institute.
Anuradhapura GA Mahinda Seneviratne agreed to provide space at the
kachcheri for the Institute to run a rice cream sales outlet.
Rescue operation to find buried child
A rescue operation was underway yesterday to find a two and half year
old child, buried under an earth mound that collapsed on the child’s
house in Alawala, Attanagalla.
The 30 year-old mother who was seriously injured in the incident was
admitted to the Wathupitiwala hospital.
According to our provincial reporters, the mother was in a critical
condition and quoting hospital sources they said that she was to be
transferred to the Gampaha hospital.
A massive rescue operation led by Police was underway to locate the
child.
Woman held for flouting Fauna and Flora Act

A woman resident in Ratnapura was arrested by the Wildlife Department
flying squad for being possession of a set of reptiles, mammals and
birds in contravention of the provisions of the Fauna and Flora
Protection Act.
She was produced before Balapitiya magistrate Asanga Bodaragama and
released on Rs 50,000 cash and Rs one million personal bail.
