Sangakkara century puts Sri Lanka in control

Inspired by Kumar Sangakkara's eighth Test hundred Sri Lanka virtually batted West Indies out of the second cricket Test at the Asgiriya International Stadium in Kandy yesterday. By stumps on a rain interrupted third day, Sri Lanka had taken their second innings total to an imposing 340 for seven wickets, an overall lead of 342 with three wickets intact and two days remaining.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Shantha Kottegoda flew to the Wanni area on Saturday along with several senior Army Officers. He was received by Major General P.S.B. Kulathunge, Commander Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ (W)) on arrival and accompanied to the Security Forces Headquarters where the Army Chief was accorded a Guard of Honour by Wanni soldiers. This was followed by a brief account of the security situation in the area by the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters Wanni. The Visiting Commander addressing Officers and soldiers, encouraged them to continue their duties in a soldierly manner in the face of enemy atrocities and ceasefire violations by the LTTE. He emphasised the need to adhere to the Ceasefire Agreement. Commanders of 21 and 56 Divisions, Brigade Commanders and Unit Commanders also participated. After his brief stay at the SFHQ (W), the Commander departed for Mannar on a visit to the Area Headquarters. Lt. Gen Shantha Kottegoda was welcomed by Brigadier S.M.D. Rajapakse, Commander, Area Headquarters Mannar who explained about the area’s Security situation. Later, he visited the Forward Defence Line to inspect the defences.
