Beauties all: A New Year festival organised by the Police Families’ Welfare Association was held at the Pre-school for Children of Police Families at the Maradana Police Station complex yesterday. Here First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa who was the chief guest crowns little miss Ranuthi Piyumika Perera who was adjudged the Mini Avurudu Kumari. The Runners-up were Ayuni Mithanga Samaratunga and Nisini Thilothmi. Police Families Welfare Association President Anoma Goonatilleke Wickramaratne, IGP Jayantha Wickramaratne were also present.

Benefits intact


The Government yesterday reiterated that it had no intention of curtailing benefits and rights enjoyed by public servants. “If the Government takes any action, it would be for the benefit of the public sector and not vice-versa,” Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardane said.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told Parliament yesterday the international community should reach a crescendo in calling on the LTTE to lay down arms and allow the people to leave the safe zone, in the absence of which punitive measures would follow.
