Govt launches three million tree planting program

The Government said yesterday that it would launch a program to plant three million saplings islandwide, as a measure to enhance natural resources and ensure food security.

Trade, Marketing Development, Consumer Services and Cooperatives Minister Bandula Gunewardene said this mega tree planting program would be enacted with the help of all Government and non Government stakeholders.

The authorities are planning to distribute 1,100,000 jak plants, 400,000 coconut seedlings, 273,00 bread fruit plants, 240,000 mango plants etc.

Authorities have also planned to hold a symbolic ceremony at Temple Trees under President Mahinda Rajapaksa's patronage.
