Special raids to nab errant traders

Special inspection raids to ascertain the quality of food was launched in Pettah, Maradana and Borella areas on Monday and will continue till today, Chief Medical Officer of Health to the Colombo Municipal Council, Dr. P. S. Kariyawasam said. The raids will cover food items consumed specially during the festival season, such as cakes, biscuits, sweets and fruits.

Thus groceries, bakeries and outlets, which sell expired food items will be screened.

According to the Colombo Central Medical Officer of Health Dr. Prasad Ranaweera, raids have been carried out each month in the Central Colombo area but this group raid is conducted specially to coincide with the New Year festival.

Up to now 12 errant traders have been prosecuted for selling expired food items. Those found guilty will be punished according to the Food Act No. 26 of 1980.
