Munchee inter-school under 19 limited overs final:
Angelo pilots Peterites to victory
Chris DHAMBARAGE
Skipper Angelo Perera starred with bat and ball as St. Peter’s
College trounced their traditional rivals St. Joseph’s College by 96
runs in the Munchee inter-school under 19 knock out limited overs
cricket tournament final worked off at the SSC grounds in Maitland Place
yesterday.

The Sri Lanka youth vice captain hit a top score of 45 to spearhead
his team to a competitive 228 for 9 after been put into bat and then
followed up with a controlled spell of bowling that had the Joes
dismissed for 132 runs in 40 overs.
This was also the second time that the Peterites had defeated their
opponents this season in a one-day match having also won their ‘Battle
of the Saints’ annual encounter by a convincing margin at the Khettarama
Stadium.
Angelo Perera came into the middle at a vital stage of the innings
and struck two boundaries while facing 75 deliveries. He was also able
to build up a couple of significant partnerships along with Isuru Peiris
(24) and Chatura Peiris (25).
However the real acceleration was done by the hard hitting Akshu
Fernando who made a quick fire 37 from 29 deliveries inclusive of two
sixes and one boundary. St. Joseph’s College of course picked up wickets
at regular intervals through Trishen Rajasuriya and Chaturanga Kumara.
But they were not able to stop the flow of runs and also conceded too
many extras in the form of wides amounting to 21. St. Joseph’s College
in reply showed that they did not have a proper game plan to chase this
challenging target against one of the best bowling attacks this year.
They simply succumbed under pressure and also gifted a couple of
wickets to their opponents in the form of run outs.
Nevertheless this was another tremendous effort from the Peterites
who had worked hard to improve their game throughout the season. Skipper
Angelo Perera again led from the front while capturing a couple of key
wickets that put the opposition on the defensive.
St. Joseph’s College would have been bowled out for less than one
hundred runs if not for a couple of useful contributions from the
tail-enders Dinal Dhambarage (19) and last man Trishen Rajasuriya who
was surprisingly the top scorer with 23 that included two boundaries.
