Nominations over

A large number of recognized political parties and independent groups are in the fray to select 225 legislators for the 7th Parliament at the General election scheduled to be held on April 8. The period granted by the Elections Commissioner to accept nominations ended at noon yesterday.

Kerawalapitiya to boost economic growth

The Kerawalapitiya multi-fuel combined cycle power plant, Yugadanavi, the first ever power plant with a 300 megawatt capacity designed and built by Sri Lankan engineers is another important step forward in the ambitious national electrification policy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Anti-Tank mines seized

Mannar Police seized three Anti-Tank Mines on Thursday, buried in a thicket in Mannar. Police Spokesman Prishanatha Jayakody said the AT mines each weighed 16 kg. They were found buried at the 2 km post on the Mannar-Kalpadu road. The mines were seized by a group of Police led by Mannar Police HQI.

‘Ad’ conman nabbed

A suspect who urged the public in a Sunday Newspaper advertisement to deposit over Rs 1.7 million in two accounts promising to grant them low interest loans and deceived them was arrested by the Colombo Fraud Bureau.
