Anti-Tank mines seized
Mannar Police seized three Anti-Tank Mines on Thursday, buried in a
thicket in Mannar.
Police Spokesman Prishanatha Jayakody said the AT mines each weighed
16 kg.
They were found buried at the 2 km post on the Mannar-Kalpadu road.
The mines were seized by a group of Police led by Mannar Police HQI.
The Army Bomb Disposal Squad diffused the three AT mines. No suspects
have been arrested in this connection so far. Police are investigating.
Meanwhile, Trincomalee Police seized a T-56 weapon hidden in a
thicket on a coconut estate in Kadakarachchena village.
It was seized by a group of Police led by the (OIC) of the
Trincomalee District Intelligence Unit, SI Subasinghe.
The Tangalle Police seized a live hand grenade yesterday near a
building at the Tangalle Maha Vidyalaya play ground.
Tanthirimale Police are conducting investigations into the death of a
Civil Guard at Thursday night when his hut in a chena caught fire while
he was inside. The chena owned by the Civil Guard located at
Halambagaswala in Tanthirimale.
A motor cyclist died when he was hit by a lorry at Dunagaha, on the
Negombo-Divulapitya Road on Wednesday. The victim Sududevage Somaratne
(57) of Maradagahamula died on admission to the Divulapitiya Hospital.
Police said that the accident has taken place when the lorry
attempted to overtake the motor cycle. The Negombo Magistrate ordered
that the lorry driver be remanded until March 10.
Meanwhile, 19 commuters sustained injuries when two private buses
collided near the Police Quarters at Matara Beach Road. The victims were
admitted to the Matara Hospital.
