Sathwa Sevana, the temporary animal shelter established by the Animal Welfare and Safety Society in Kahathuduwa, houses 182 dogs. The shelter also offers neutering facilities for dogs free of charge. Started in 2004, the animal shelter functions under Hemantha Jayatilleke. Outsiders can donate 30 kilos of rice to feed these dogs. Another animal shelter housing cats and dogs is located in Dehiwala.

Biggest Tiger base in Mannar captured

Troops consolidate positions in Illuppaikkadavai:

TROOPS operating north of Mannar yesterday marked yet another victory capturing the biggest LTTE base on the Mannar front, consolidating their positions in Illuppaikkadavai 10 Km north of Vidathalthivu where they captured the biggest Sea Tiger base on the Western coast just three days ago.

Six Tiger boats destroyed

As ground troops consolidated their positions in Illuppaikkadavai in the North of Vidathalthivu, the Navy and the Air Force in a joint operation destroyed six Tiger boats and damaged two others which were operating in the sea off Nachchikuda in the North of Illuppaikkadavai.
