Steady progress with Ayurveda research
A workshop to reveal the outcome of ayrveda research made under the
Ayurveda Department Research Fund was held under the patronage of
Indigenous Medicine Minister Tissa Karaliyadda at Bandaranaike Memorial
Ayurvedic Research Institute, Navinna.
Indigenous Medicine Minister Tissa Karaliyadda reiterated that
ayurvedic research should be made at optimum level as they had the
intention of taking ayurvedic treatment to international level and the
Government expects to give all the necessary assistance in this regard.
The Borella Ayurveda Teaching Hospital the Ayurveda Research
Institute, the Ayurveda Drugs Corporation, Ruhunu University and Central
Provincial Council jointly made these researches.
Ayurveda Department has spent Rs. 30,000,000 for this project.
Nine research projects have been conducted under this programme.
research results made on diabetes, male infertility and dermatological
disorders were launched at this workshop.
Under multi-faceted research on cultivation of bushy type
Kothalahimbutu plantation for sustainable leaf stem harvesting, surveys
on the preparation of indigenous cereals and pulsars in Sri Lanka were
also launched.
Enhance quality drugs produced by the Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Drugs
Corporation and introduction of new products were submitted.
Problems arose in the preservation of decoction. A prominent team of
doctors under Prof. Samarakone have made research on producing drugs in
crystal forms as a remedy. They have successfully carried out the
research on Tripal decoction.
The Research institute anticipates to issue this decoction in crystal
form to the patients, after analyzing its chemical reaction.
The Borella Ayrvedic Teaching Hospital has commenced betel leaf
treatment for diabetes patients.
Patients are being treated on Mondays and Thursdays. The treatment
has shown successful results.
The cultivation of rare variety of herbal bushy type Kothalahimbutu
is a timely need. The agricultural faculty students of the Ruhunu
University have made research on cultivation of Kothalahimbutu to get
maximum harvest.
Seeds and stems are planted and they are planted in coir based
containers for effective root harvesting. Good results could be achieved
by planting seeds in natural means. It has been identified that the
seeds are growing well on sandy soil.
The Educational Cultivation Unit of Agricultural Faculty of Ruhunu
University has made research on maximum root harvesting in Vetiver
cultivation. They have tried several methods.
They have found that effective root harvesting could be obtained by
planting them in a mixture of soil, sand and coir dust at the ratio of
1:2:2. Further by planting in 45 cm container bags 40 cm height harvest
could be obtained.
Soil-less cultivation in the mixture of one litre paper liquid to
five litre water and fertiliser containing phosperus produces maximum
harvest.
Further research is to be carried out to find methods for producing
maximum oil harvest. Vetiver cultivation is carried out in the herbal
park at Girandurukotte on research basis and have obtained successful
results.
The Borella Ayurvedha Teaching Hospital is carrying out research on
the effect of Athma Gupta Churnaya on male infertility patients.
They are also trying Gas penal Virechana decoction for dermatological
disorders.
