Lanka to waive migrant worker visa fees

Sri Lanka in consultation with Arab countries has decided to waive migrant worker Visa fees to further encourage prospective employment seekers in the Middle East and the Asian region. Accordingly Visa fees charged either by the sending country or the receiving country is to be annulled, following a decision taken by member countries at the recently concluded "Colombo process" summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

President pledges to uphold TU rights

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday asserted that his Government will never to suppress the democratic rights and privileges of the working class. He was addressing the 'Presidential Felicitation for Prestigious Service' ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday, to felicitate veteran Trade Union Leaders in recognition of their long standing and dignified service rendered to the Trade Union movement of the country for over 50 years.

Defence Secretary sues The Leader

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has filed action in the District Court of Mount Lavinia against The Sunday Leader chief editor Lasantha Wickramatunga and Leader Publications Pvt Limited claiming a sum of Rs 1,000 million as damages in respect of an article published in the Sunday Leader of July 15, 2007 under the headline 'MiG deal crash lands on Government.'

Corporate bond market needs punch

Lanka Ratings re-branded as RAM Ratings:

The Government bond market is active than the corporate bond market in Sri Lanka and the local corporate bond market needs to develop more. Executive Director of RAM Holdings Berhad, Suresh Menon said only Rs. 2 billion was raised by corporate bonds as against Rs. 886 billion government bonds in Sri Lanka. "There is a huge potential for the corporate bond market to grow. However the local corporate bond market is undeveloped," Menon said.
