Peradeniya University closed after student clash

Kandy: Peradeniya university was closed indefinitely yesterday after
two groups of students continued their violent behaviour yesterday too
even after settling the dispute which arose on Sunday between the
Science Faculty and Engineering Faculty students.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Harishchandra Abeygunawardena ordered the
students to vacate the university premises and also the hostels before 1
p.m. yesterday.
He has also informed that disciplinary action will be taken against
students who are not following his orders. The clashes between two
groups of students had broken out on Sunday at a party organised by the
Science Faculty students following a cricket match.
The Engineering Faculty students have also been invited for this
party and the dispute has arisen between the Science Faculty students
after this party on Sunday night.
Thirteen students from the Science Faculty and the Engineering
Faculty have been hospitalised as rival students groups clashed. Police
teams were called on to the university premises yesterday to prevent
further clashes between the two student groups.
