Major fire at Ratmalana railway dumping ground

A major fire broke out yesterday at the dumping ground of the Mechanical Engineering Department yard of the Railways Department in Ratmalana, destroying discarded metals and railway carriages.

The fire broke out yesterday around 11.30 am at this massive dumping ground of the Railway Department which extends to over five acres.

The dumping ground has been filled with discarded rail lines, rail carriages and a variety of metals discarded from the Railway yards in Ratmalana.

The fire fighting units from the Railway Department and the Sri Lanka Air Force camp, were called into the scene to douse the fire and control it without allowing it to spread. No one sustained injuries due to the fire.

The Railway Security Department has initiated investigations to ascertain how the fire broke out, a spokesman for the Railways Department said.
