Irresponsible batting put Lankans out of C'ship
Chris Dhambarage reporting
Sri Lanka were knocked out of the Cup Championship following a shock
79 run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in their International Cricket
Council (ICC) under 19 World Cup quarterfinal match worked off at the
Royal Selangor Club grounds in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The Lankans chasing a victory target of 213 runs lost wickets at
regular intervals and were dismissed for just 134 runs in the 42nd over.
New Zealand will now go onto meet former champions India in the first
semifinal on Wednesday at the Kinrara Cricket Academy grounds while Sri
Lanka will take on England in the Play Off semifinal on the same day at
the Royal Selangor Club grounds.
Sri Lanka of course made another fine start to their run chase with
the openers Dilshan Munaweera and Lahiru Thirimanna putting on 32 runs
from seven overs. But thereafter Sri Lanka completely lost their way and
soon slumped to 86 for 5 by the 24th over.
Former captain and all rounder Sachith Pathirana kept Sri Lanka's
hopes alive to a certain extent with a battling innings under tremendous
pressure. The hard hitting left hander hit a top score of 42 from 62
deliveries with the help of four boundaries.
Pathirana made a determined effort to revive the Sri Lanan innings
while putting on 42 valuable runs for the fifth wicket together with his
captain Ashan Subasinghe and a further 30 runs for the sixth wicket with
all rounder Roshane Silva.
Even then the Kiwis put up a splendid performance on the field
through some disciplined bowling and brilliant fielding that helped them
to maintain the pressure until the end. They rallied around through
their pace attack with some good short spells with Man of the match
Timothy Southee causing the early damage.
The right arm fast bowler who is in contention for the Player of the
Series award broke the backbone of the Sri Lankan batting with a great
spell of seam bowling. He delivered the first blow by breaking a
threatening opening partnership and then picked up the important wickets
of Munaweera, Thirimanna and Chandimal.
Earlier New Zealand who were put into bat recovered from a middle
order collapse to reach a competitive score of 213 runs from 49.5 overs.
They made a steady start with the openers George Worker and Kane
Williamson adding 79 runs from 19 overs.
However Sri Lanka came back into the game by capturing a couple of
quick wickets through their spinners Umesh Karunaratne and Roshane Silva
who finished with three wickets each. But some useful contributions from
the middle order batsmen Fraser Colson and Greg Morgan carried New
Zealand towards a match winning total at the end.
