A lone policeman guards the bridge over the lagoon at Mannar. This bridge, on the strategic road between Vavuniya and Mannarwhich was once blown up by the LTTE, has recently been rebuilt. The frontline between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan security forces in this part of the country stretches along this road. The police presence on this bridge is indicative of the ceasefire now on between the warring parties. In times of war this was a contested area and soldiers guarded it. (Picture by Saman Sri Wedage)
