LTTE pledges support to revive youth clubs, activities in N-E by Uditha Kumarasinghe The LTTE has pledged support to the Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs (SLFYC) in its efforts to revive youth clubs and conduct youth development activities in the North-East areas. During a recent discussion conducted between the SLFYC and LTTE, the request by the federation to formulate a systematic program to develop youth activities in the North-East, the LTTE pledged its full co-operation towards such a program, SLFYC Secretary Sajeewa Upuljith told the 'Daily News' yesterday. The SLFYC also handed over a memorandum addressed to LTTE Leader Prabhakaran to the LTTE representatives at this meeting, he said. He said the federation had discussed with the German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) a program to provide vocational training to the unemployed youth in the North-East. The LTTE Intelligence Unit and the youth development section of the National Youth Services Council will decide on the training needed. Meanwhile arrangements have also been made to set up vocational training centres and conduct youth camps in the North-East, he said. Upuljith said at present 600 Youth Clubs are operating in the North-East. Nearly 50,000 youth have already become active members of these youth clubs. A majority of the youth in the North-East areas have obtained the membership of these youth clubs. He said:" The lack of funds is a major constraint for the SLFYC to conduct the functions of nearly 10,000 Youth Clubs operating countrywide with a total membership of 700,000. No allocations have been made to the SLFYC so far to carry out its youth development activities." |
