Rubber Corp. fraud: : Former chairman, accountant, factory manager further remanded

The Sri Lanka Rubber Manufacturing and Export Corporation former Chairman Sarath Wickremasinghe, Corporation accountant Ms. V.G. Delduwa and factory manager Upul Nanda Munasinghe who had been remanded in connection with the alleged massive fraud in the Corporation were yesterday further remanded till September 9 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Priyantha Fernando.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigating the fruad revealed that Rs.2.5 million had been used to purchase lands from various parts in the country to set up factories. But not a single deed in respect of the corporation is available, the CID officials said. The CID had appointed a special team to peruse all bank accounts of the corporation and vouchers issued for the last six years.

Earlier the CID questioned several leading opposition politicians in order to record their statements in connection with the alleged fraud.

The CID special team investigating the racket questioned several VVIP's in connection with the misuse of the funds released to the Corporation when President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was the Finance Minister.

The CID officials also recorded statements from several senior and junior officers in the Plantation Industry. The Acting DIG CID commenced inquiry, on a directive by the former IGP Lucky Kodituwakku, into the alleged fraud on the instruction of the Cabinet.
