Dock statement of 1st accused not acceptable - ASG

by Wasantha Ramanayake

Lie after lie, improbability after improbability, the dock statement of the first accused was not believable in the least submitted the chief prosecuting officer Additional Solicitor General Rienzie Arsekuleratne before the Trial-at-Bar hearing the Custom Officer Sujith Prasanna Perera murder case, yesterday.

The Trial-at-Bar comprised High Court Judges Sri Skandarajah (President), Eric Basnayaka and Maxwell Paranagama.

According to the indictment, three accused, Anura Weerawansa, Vajira Indrajith and Saman Udayakumara were charged with conspiracy to commit the murder of Sujith Prasanna Perera. The first accused was charged with aiding and abetting the second and third accused with committing the murder of Sujith Perera. Second and third accused were charged with committing the murder of Sujith Perera at Wedamulla Kelaniya between March 21 and 24, 2001.

The Additional Solicitor General in his oral submissions further said that first accused refuted all charges against him. He queried as to why the first accused ran away and hid himself if what he says was the truth, that influential people were trying to connect him with the crime. "Who were these influential people, why did they want to implicate the other accused. And how did his friends apart from the independent people were manipulated to testify against the accused."

ASG also submitted that the first accused said that he had conducted many investigations as a customs officer and even tried to establish contacts with the Philippine Government. It was not the practice of the customs officers to establish contacts with regard to the investigations with other states but it was the task of the Director General of Customs and the Foreign Ministry. Further submissions will continue today.
