Tourism plan for five economic regions

by Tharika Goonathilake

The Sri Lanka Tourism Board in collaboration with the regional ministries has embarked on a massive tourism development zone plan incorporating the Government's five economic regions. As part of this initiative, measures are now being taken to develop the tourism potential in each of the five regions- Central, Southern, North Western, Western and North, through the development of concurrent tourism zones.

"The idea behind this whole concept is to identify the varied attractions in each of the different economic regions and relate the different characteristic of each region to promote tourism," Sri Lanka Tourism Board, Director Planing and Development S. Kalaiselvam told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

According to him, during the Government's Budget speech special emphasis was made on the need incorporate a system of economic development on a regional basis, and the tourism zones system has been designed to work within this framework.

"We have already developed zone plans for the North East identifying four semi zone areas holding key attractions. This include Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Kalkudah and Arugam bay. For instant Arugam bay will be developed as an area for water sports, while Nilaveli will be promoted for its beaches," Kalaiselvam said.

He said that similarly, a tourism development plan is now being developed for the Southern region incorporating eight zonal attractions areas comprising Wildlife, tropical rainforests, culture, beaches.

The other three economic regions too will also have similar zonal tourism development plans within this year.

"Unlike in the past this will help to streamline the tourism attractions in each of the regions and help the Tourism Ministry promote Sri Lanka's diversity at its best," the Director said.
