Residents to see Colombo in a whole new light

by Ranil Wijayapala

The Colombo Municipal Council will implement a special programme to turn the country's commercial capital to a night city by increasing commercial and entertainment activities to attract more people to the city in the night.

Colombo Deputy Mayor Azath Salley told the Daily News on Tuesday that the program will begin with the lighting of the city under a special program in collaboration with all five star hotels and high rise building in the city from September 3 onwards.

Under this special program all city streets and buildings will be lit up at night for the people to move in the city without any fear, the Deputy Mayor said. Cafes, banks and shops will also be open till late night with the beginning of the program, he added.

"We need to let the people feel that Colombo is safe even at night for them to engage in their day-to-day activities and to entertain themselves," the Deputy Mayor added. This is practised in developed cities in Asia like Singapore to attract more people to the city in the night.

Businessmen on Sea Street can also benefit with these improvements as they can attract more locals and foreigners to their jewellery businesses. The CMC has also decided to open the Viharamahadevi park for the public till late night and also to open the lawn in front of the Colombo Town Hall for the children and women for their entertainment, he added.

The CMC will also invite media institutions to provide daily entertainment for the public at these parks and other recreation grounds to make this effort successful, the Deputy Mayor added.
