by Ananda Kannangara A massive National Identity Card (NIC) distribution program in the Jaffna, Trincomalee, Killinochchi, Vanni and Mullaitivu districts will be launched by the Department for Registration of Persons (DRP) before the end of next month. The decision has been taken by the Department as a response to several requests made by public officials and citizens living in these areas. "The Department also focused its attention on these Districts for the past three months since a record number of persons who left their permanent dwellings decades ago have already returned to their villages following the peaceful environment prevailed in these districts, Commissioner for Registration of Persons Wijaya Ranasinghe said. Ranasinghe said the peaceful situation in these districts prompted the department to expedite this program considering a large number of persons presently living as well as others who are expected to return to their homes within the next few months." Asked how the distribution process will be carried out the Commissioner said that in addition to the usual way of calling applications along with other documents from persons through the District Divisional Secretariats, the Department is expected to conduct regular mobile service programs. "So that processed NICs could be given to persons within a very short period", he added. |
