UL, Lufthansa Technik to launch MRO at HIA
SriLankan Airlines (UL) in partnership with
Lufthansa Technik are to offer MRO (Mechanical Repair and Overhaul)
facilities at the new Hambantota International Airport(HIA).
Chairman SriLankan Airlines, Nishantha Wickremasinghe told ‘Daily
News Business’ after the 68th annual general meeting of
International Air Transport Association, (IATA) that this would add
more international recognism to HIA and also bring in additional
revenue to SriLankan.

Timex & Fergasam start operations in Mannar
Sri Lanka’s Timex and Fergasam Group (T&FG), a
manufacturer and exporter of high quality garments is ready to
commence the construction of twin apparel factories in Mannar
Industrial Zone approved by Board of Investment (BOI) end of June
2012. This proposed US $ 5 million worth factory, a first in the
Mannar region will be ready for commercial operations by January
2013. According to the Group Chairman with the commencement of the
new factory complex over 1,200 employment opportunities would be
created for the people in the area.

Colombo landing clearance for helicopters
Following the relaxation on stringent security
restrictions on civil flights over the capital city domestic airline
and helicopter operator Deccan Aviation announced the establishment
of the first privately run city helipad at the Colts Cricket Grounds
in Havelock Road, The government has recently given approval for
private helicopter operators to conduct flights into the city of
Colombo. With tight security imposed on the capital city during the
war, helicopter flights into Colombo was strictly limited to those
operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force. The recent relaxation of the
rules is seen as an effort to ensure a level playing field between
the commercial arm of the SLAF and other helicopter operators.

‘Footwear, leather industry gaining momentum’
The country’s footwear and leather industry is
gaining momentum and could be positioned to become a sector that
caters to both local and international markets. ‘We are having a
three prong approach to develop the local footwear and leather
industry infusing technology and focusing on the training aspects.
As the public awareness on the quality of locally manufactured
footwear is high, the industry is poised to become a prominent
segment in the retail market, Footwear Advisory Council Chairman
Rangith Hettiarachchy told ‘Daily News Business’.
