Laptops could be obtained under this loan scheme for them to gain
computer literacy and IT knowledge. The Scheme also serves as a boost
for the government’s programme aimed at promoting knowledge in
Information Technology.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed on
recently at the Head Office of Lankaputhra Development Bank. It was
signed between the Lankaputhra Development Bank and E-Wis, providing for
concessionary loans to entrepreneurs, professionals and public sector
employees to purchase laptops.
IT knowledge is considered essential towards enhancing productivity
at Government Institutions. A majority of parents lack resources to
purchase laptops outright and this scheme helps overcome this obstacle
by providing an opportunity to them to purchase laptops on easy payment
terms.
Chairperson of the Bank, Mrs Kumudhini Kulatunga said on the occasion
that they were looking into the possibility of extending this facility
to private sector as well as higher educational institutions. She noted
that as a national bank, the Lankaputhra Development Bank has been
vested with many national responsibilities.
The Lankaputhra Development Bank was launched with the objective of
boosting the national economy. Towards this end, the Bank has already
launched several projects to benefit the small and medium
entrepreneurial sectors. In addition, the Bank operates several minors’
savings accounts, offering attractive rates of interest. Lankaputhra
Development Bank also offers leasing facilities.
The Bank successfully operates branches in Colombo, Hambantota,
Polonnaruwa, Kegalle, Kandy, Wennappuwa and Batticaloa and has drawn up
plans to open a branch covering the Jaffna region.
