LONDON — The UN’s
envoy on counter-terrorism and human
rights launched an investigation on
Thursday into the impact of drone
strikes on civilians, aimed at
securing accountability when attacks
have gone “badly wrong”. Ben
Emmerson, a British lawyer and
United Nations special rapporteur,
said the huge expansion in the
technology behind unmanned planes,
and consequently their increasing
use, required a new legal framework.

Several roads in
the eastern and north central areas
were flooded as heavy rains
continued yesterday, Disaster
Management Centre (DMC) sources
said. “The Batticaloa - Kattankudy,
Manampitiya - Gallella and Sungawila
- Somawathiya roads were inundated,”
they said. DMC sources said the
extreme weather conditions displaced
456 people mainly in the North
Central Province as landslide

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.
