Lawyers call on President
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has drawn attention to the difficulties
faced by lawyers when engaging in their professional activities, and
difficulties faced by people when availing themselves of legal services,
a media release issued by the President's Media Unit said.
The President drew attention to this after a team of lawyers,
including President's Counsel Tirantha Welaliyadda called on him at
Temple Trees on Thursday.
President's Counsel Walaliyadda pointed out that lawyers and the
public face difficulties since certain charges are high,such as, land
registration, perusing land registries and obtaining copies, of deeds
etc. Besides, people in rural areas are affected by the increased
marriage registration fee of Rs 5,000.
The President noted that necessary measures would be taken after
careful consideration.
the President drew attention to safeguarding the professional dignity
of lawyers. The team of lawyers further requested the President to make
necessary amendments to the new Land Registration Act. Moreover, the
team requested the President to seek ideas and views of lawyers if the
constitution is amended in future.
Presidential Chief of Staff Gamini Senerath and a few other
dignitaries participated in the discussion. |
