Kingsbury Hotel opens

Hayleys invests over US$18 mn:

The former Intercontinental Hotel, opened its doors as The Kingsbury, having undergone a major refurbishment, backed by the Haleys Group of Companies, the country's most diversified conglomerate. President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday, opened the The Kingsbury, the most modern luxurious hotel in the heart of the Colombo city, delivering a high level of hospitality and services that would delight the discerning traveller.

‘Women labour force participation low in Lanka’

The labour force participation rate of women in Sri Lanka, has not only been low, but had fallen from 35.7 per cent in 2006 to 32.1 percent in 2010. This was revealed at a workshop organized by the ILO on Participation of women in the Sri Lankan labour force, which was held at the Galadari Hotel yesterday. Addressing the gathering, Director General, Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC) Ravi Peiris, said there was plenty of potential in the BPO sector of the country, but the restrictions on night work in respect of women, had to be relaxed in order to open more opportunities for investors.

‘Underutilized lands help drop in coconut yields’

The Sri Lankan Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB), said that one of the reasons for the drop in coconut yields, was due to coconut lands being underutilized and the numbers of trees required for an acre being below the standard rate. At one time, Sri Lanka was one of the leading coconut exporters in the region, which exported coconuts to many European and Asian markets, but had now lost its position due to manifold reasons.

The South Asian Textiles and Clothing Industry was originated to the global market and exporters should have access to supplies of raw material at world prices, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), said in a report.
