Akuressa PS chairman re-remanded

The Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha chairman remanded on charges of seducing a 14-year-old schoolgirl was re-remanded until July 30 when produced before Matara chief magistrate Udesh Ranatunga yesterday. The suspect was earlier remanded until July 16 by Matara additional magistrate Dulani Amarasinghe who refused a bail application made by the suspect’s counsel D Dahanayake.

Motorist veers into the Mahaweli

A person died after the car he was driving reportedly veered off the highway near Polgolla Dam in Katugastota and plunged into the Mahaweli River yesterday morning. Police said the accident had taken place at Dutugamunu Mawatha in Polgolla, Kandy. The car was found submerged in the river.

PS chairman arrested on assault charges

Karuwalagaswewa Pradeshiya Sabha chairman was arrested by Police for allegedly assaulting a person with a bottle in Saliyawewa. The victim, M C Thilakarante who is the manager of the same Pradeshiya Sabha has been admitted to the Puttalam hospital.

Weapons recovered from North, East

Special Task Force (STF) troops attached to the Mullaitivu camp found a haul of explosives hidden in two places during a search operation in the Mulliyaveli Police Division on July 15. According to the Police Media Unit, the STF found 37 pressure bombs, two 60mm mortar ammunition, three RPG anti- personnel ammunition, five RPG anti-tank ammunition, seven RPG charges, one T56 magazine,one 15 kg side bomb and 2,000 T56 ammunition.
