Impersonator netted

A suspect arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) for defrauding a large sum of money by impersonating the personal secretary of a high-ranking government official, was remanded until today by the Pelmadulla magistrate.

Police media spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana said the suspect, a resident of Habaraluwewa, Sevanagala, had swindled money out of the Matale Mayor’s personal secretary, the Namal Oya and Buttala Pradeshiya Sabha Vice Chairman and a member of the Padavi Sripura Pradeshiya Sabha.

After surveillance, he was arrested at the Bastian Mawatha bus stop in Pettah on Saturday.

The CCD is investigating.


Arrested with wild pig, porcupine, tortoises

Two persons were arrested by STF officers of the Gampola camp while carrying a wild pig, a porcupine and four tortoises in a lorry at Maginnawa on Kadugannawa - Gampola road on Sunday morning.

They had poached the 42 kg wild pig and the 13 kg porcupine. Police rescued the four tortoises.

STF SI Kulathunga and a team arrested the suspects and seized the animals at a check point.

The suspects, the seized animals and vehicle were handed over to the Kadugannawa Police.


Woman dies in accident

A woman died and three others: her husband, son and daughter, were seriously injured when the three wheeler they were travelling in went out of control and rolled over at Udathalawinna in Wattegama on Sunday.

Forty two-year-old V M Saul Fausana of Doragamuwa road died on admission to the Kandy hospital. Her husband, 16-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter are being treated at the same hospital. Wattegama Police are investigating.


Nabbed with cannabis

A suspect arrested with 2 kgs of cannabis at Kakapalliya in Chilaw was produced before the Chilaw magistrate yesterday.

He is a resident of Galmuruwa, Ahalakanda. Chilaw Police are investigating.

Meanwhile, Police Narcotics Bureau officers arrested a resident of Borella with 600 grammes of heroin while he was transporting the drug in a three wheeler at Wattala on Saturday.

The suspect is being interrogated.

Meanwhile, Mirihana Special Crime Investigation Unit arrested a suspect with 12.30 grammes of heroin near Madiwela Buddha statue in Mirihana on Sunday.

He was handed over to the Mirihana Police.


Remanded for molestation

A person taken into custody for allegedly molesting an 8-year-old boy of Moneragala was remanded until today by the Moneragala magistrate.

Police said the suspect had sexually abused the child in a secluded area in Liyawatte.


Youth missing

An 18-year-old youth from Hatton went missing while bathing at Mount Lavinia beach on Sunday evening.

The Mount Lavinia Police commenced a search operation to find Ramesh Pushpakantha of Kudaoya Watta, Hatton.

He is fair skinned with curly hair and is 5'6” tall. He has a bruise on his left elbow and was wearing a black denim when last seen.
