Police SIU operations strengthened
Yasaratne GAMAGE
Police Special Investigations Unit ( SIU ) operations have been
strengthened both administratively and numerically under the direction
of Inspector General of Police N K Ilangakoon.
The SIU which is operated under the purview of Police headquarters
has been expanded with a Provincial SIU under each Senior DIG in 9
provinces and more police officers assigned to each provincial unit.
The modernised main and provincial SIUs will be a catalyst to take
disciplinary and legal action when there is an allegation against a
police officer. The significance of the SIU was very much evident
recently when there were accusations against Police. For example:
HQI and four police officers in Anuradhapura were interdicted for
failure to perform their duty in a rape case of an underaged girl.
Another police sergeant was brought before court in connection with a
rape of a girl in Nawalapitiya.
A police constable was arrested and disciplinary action taken against
him regarding the transport of cannabis in Uragaha.
A constable was arrested and remanded after having been produced in
court in connection with a Buddha statue deal in Matale.
The Police Public Relations Unit in a special press release states
that the improved SIU will provide a better service to the public by
investigating circumstances involving allegations against police
officers.
