Poor garbage dumping practices and unmanaged sewage systems in the Gampola town have led to contaminating the Mahaweli river, the only waterway flowing through the town. The National Water Supply and Drainage Board warned if the problem is not rectified soon there will be a major environmental disaster. It could impose a heavy burden on the State to go for advanced water purifing techniques to ensure safe water for residents.

Inland Revenue tops Rs.136b

The Department of Inland Revenue has earned Rs. 136.5 billion during the first six months of this year. Commissioner General of Department of Inland Revenue A.A Wijepala said last year they collected Rs 104 billion in the first six months.
