This is a common sight all over Colombo and the main cities, with even primary schoolchildren compelled to carry a load of textbooks and other material to school. Most children used to carry backpacks but studies have shown that they could be harmful to spinal health in the long run. Many parents have now turned to stroller bags, once only taken by overseas travellers, to pack their children’s school material. Two suspects arrested on suspicion of killing five members from the same family over a land dispute in Delgoda on Saturday were shot dead by police in self-defence when the suspects attempted to attack the police in Delgoda yesterday.

Govt will not curtail public servants’ loans

Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama yesterday told Parliament that the Government with effect from year 2005 to 2007 has granted Rs. 15.6 billion worth property loans to 17,000 Government employees.

Dialog shareholders approve Rs. 15.5 billion Rights Issue

Telekom Malaysia (TM) to inject Rs.13 billion in FDI:

Dialog Telekom Ltd. (DTL), announced that the shareholders of DTL, at its AGM held on May 21, 2007, approved the company’s landmark Rights Issue to a value of Rs. 15.5 billion.
