Three years RI for lorry driver

COLOMBO: Colombo High Court Judge Upali Abeyratne yesterday sentenced a lorry driver to three years rigorous imprisonment for killing a motorcyclist in an accident at Borella.

Handunnettige Samantha was convicted for committing the culpable homicide not amounting to murder of R. T. Ariyaratne. Ariyaratne was killed in a motorcycle-lorry accident at Alvitigala Mawatha, Borella on April 9, 2005.

The Court also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 and another six months RI in default. The Court also ordered the convict to pay a compensation of Rs. 100,000 to the dependents of the victim.

Ariyaratne, 45, was a father of three children. The Court observed that the lorry driver drove the vehicle carelessly and the vehicle was not in a good condition.
