Narrow escape for Minister Sirisena:

A group of about a thousand UNP and JVP supporters armed with clubs, iron rods and swords came in procession and attacked the Polonnaruwa election campaign office of the UPFA causing severe damage to it.

Kongahage files case against Fonseka

USA citizenship issue:

Presidential candidate Sarath Kongahage yesterday filed a Fundamental Rights application in the Supreme Court against the candidature of New Democratic Front (NDF) Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka, on the basis that he is a citizen of the United States.

‘I will not betray country for few votes’

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday asserted that he is not ready to betray the country for a few votes and he is well aware of the problems of the Tamils in the North. There is no room for a divided country, accepting the homeland concept of the separatists or autonomy leading for a whatever form of Eelam LTTE had demanded, he added.

New markets in Asia, Middle-East:

Gem, diamond and jewellery export earnings in 2009 amounted to a massive Rs 45 billion exceeding the estimated target according to National Gem and Jewellery Authority Chairman / Chief Executive Officer Hasitha Tillekeratne.
