The woman Kusuma- wathie Kuruppuarachchi (62) of Vitharandeniya in the Hambantota District who died in a shooting incident on Tuesday at Ranna in the Tangalle area as reported by certain newspapers was not on her way to attend a Presidential election rally of the New Democratic Front candidate Sarath Fonseka.

She and some others were going to a function organised by Hambantota District M.P. Sajith Premadasa, Presidential Secretariat Sources said yesterday.

She was going to the function where free spectacles and other forms of assistance were given to mark the birthday of the Parliamentarian with others in a bus when the shooting took place, they said.

She and her family were strong supporters of the SLFP. There was a feud between the alleged suspect in the case and Kusumawathie’s family and earlier another person of the suspect’s family was killed some time back, the sources said.
