The National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD) yesterday introduced a low-cost cooker that would enable households to reduce the expenditure on gas and electricity. The affordable cooker uses coconut shell pieces and other such easily available raw materials. A creation of NERD engineer D.M.P. Bandara, it is now being licensed to private companies which will be manufacturing and marketing it. Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka launched the new invention at the Prime Minister’s office in the presence of Science and Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana, Trade and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardana and NERD Chairman Jayantha Ranatunga. Here K.P.N. Kumara, an entrepreneur who has commercialised the product, explains how it works. Picture by Sudath Nishantha
