Sri Lanka has a heritage of 382 waterfalls scattered throughout the island. The Lanka Council on Waterfalls (LCF) has initiated programs of scientific research and study to compile data on the cultural values of each waterfall and the importance of conserving them. Of the many waterfalls in the Southern region, the beautiful Ravana Ella is a popular tourist attraction.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has kick started a large number of development projects initiated by the previous PA Government, but, stalled due to corrupt practices during the tenure of office of the UNF Government, the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday.

Night club, casino and bookie taxes to be upped

The Finance Ministry is now examining a proposal for levying extra taxes from casinos, betting centres, liquor bars, wine stores, night clubs and top of the shelf luxury items to raise revenue for implementing the UPFA's pledges to the people, the Daily News learns.
