Wayamba poll peaceful - PAFFREL

Taken as a whole the Wayamba Provincial Council Election has been held in a very calm and peaceful manner, said the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) in statement issued yesterday.

It said the police had done a good job in ensuring law and order during the election while election officials had performed their job well. Police had deployed mobile patrols to cover all polling stations in addition to static guards while the army was in readiness to assist in the overall observation work.

PAFFREL said that it deployed 2,350 static observers and 250 mobile observers during the elections period and they have reported that elections were very peaceful.

However there had been several minor incidents in Yapahuwa, Mawathagama, Galgamuwa and Hiriyala electorates in the Kurunegala district and Bangadeniya, Puttalam, Arachichikattuwa and Chilaw in the Puttalam district which did not impact on the general peaceful atmosphere during the election.

PAFFREL said about 40 to 50 percent registered voters had exercised their votes in certain polling centres while 50 to 55 per cent had cast their votes in others.
